Eeeeek! It’s happening: our first look at the Barbie movie has officially arrived. No, we’re not talking about Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses or Barbie and the Diamond Castle — we’re getting a real, live-action version featuring Margot Robbie in all of her pink-on-pink glory.
Mattel and Warner Bros. are partnering to bring this ~iconic~ character to life for the first time with Margot Robbie both starring in and producing the film. That's a GirlBoss™ if we've ever seen one, which is fitting because Barbie herself has clocked hours at over 200 jobs, according to Mattel. Margot spoke to Marc Malkin at Variety, saying that “I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids.”
Warner Bros. released the first teaser image back in May, and spoiler alert, it’s completely adorable. We’re screaming, crying, and throwing up over Barbie's bright pink convertible in this brand new sneak peek photo — and predicting a huge resurgence of pink fashion in the near future (tiny plastic shoes not included). In the meantime, here is everything we know so far about the upcoming Barbie movie.

Good News! There Will Be Two Wicked Movies
Is there a trailer for the Barbie movie?
Yes! On April 4, 2023, a new teaser trailer brought us into Barbieland, where all the Barbies and Kens hang out and accomplish impressive feats, like being president and winning Nobel Peace Prizes. In the latest trailer, Ryan Gosling's Ken will stop at nothing to impress Margot Robbie's Barbie — even if it means fighting Simu Liu's Ken on the beach. Watch the second teaser trailer below.

The first teaser trailer for Greta Gerwig's Barbie hit theaters in December 2022 and was subsequently released on YouTube. While we're still waiting for a full-length trailer, we can hold on to all the big (and very pink!) moments in the teaser, which begins with Margot Robbie dressed as the first-ever Barbie doll with Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" playing in the background as an homage to the sci-fi film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Who is playing Barbie in the new movie?
After years of rumors swirling around the iconic doll's film, Margot Robbie was officially cast as Barbie in 2019. The movie announcement came out in 2014, with Amy Schumer initially landing the lead role. Amy dropped out due to creative differences and scheduling issues. It was then reported that Anne Hathaway would fill the spot before The Hollywood Reporter noted in 2017 that Margot was in talks to take the leading role.
What drew the Australian actress to this particular project? Margot told Harper's Bazaar, “I didn't want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend — just a catalyst for the male storyline. It was uninspiring.”

The official Warner Bros. Twitter account recently tweeted out a first-look image of Margot as Barbie. The actress grins at the camera, wearing a striped blue halter top and a polka-dotted blue headband with a chunky blue beaded bracelet on her wrist. Her signature blond hair is styled in loose waves. Margot sits in a bright pink convertible with her hands on the wheels, against a matching pink background.
But as fab as Miss Margot is in her Barbie get-up, multiple actresses are playing Barbies in the upcoming film. Emma Mackey is confirmed to be playing Barbie as well as Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, and Issa Rae. Confused? You'll just have to wait and see what kind of movie magic director Greta Gerwig whips up for the film!
Emma Mackey spoke to Empire and exclusively confirmed that all of the Barbies got together at the beginning of shooting and had a sleepover together — which is so cute that we can hardly handle it. Emma revealed that their activities involved "playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]." The Sex Education actress seemed happy about her Barbie role, saying, "It’s great to do comedy because Emily was a sad, dark drama. Barbie is light and funny and silly and American and pink.”
We like to think that the sleepover was pink, too — were there pillow fights and matching pink PJs? How do we score a pair?!
Who's playing Ken in the Barbie Movie?
The one and only Ryan Gosling will be playing Barbie's boyfriend, Ken — we're doodling virtual hearts already. And besties, we finally have a photo of the actor as Barbie's BF. Between his platinum blonde hair, shirtless, full-denim 'fit (good morning to Ryan Gosling's six-pack, and Ryan Gosling's six-pack only), and the all-pink background that appears to resemble Barbie's Dream House — we are in love.

According to an exclusive from Deadline, the dreamy Crazy, Stupid, Love actor initially passed on the role but eventually committed after his schedule freed up. Twitter reacted to this announcement in a frenzy — one user compared Ryan to a Ken doll, saying "The resemblance is uncanny."

But mirroring how Margot Robbie is one of many Barbies, Ryan Gosling isn't the only Ken — Simu Liu has also signed on to play an iteration of Ken in Greta Gerwig's upcoming film. In fact, the Shang-Chi star told The Independent that he waxed his entire body to prep for his role as the plastic doll. "Waxing has been an education to say the least," he said, referring to it as "one of the most painful experiences of my life." At least the pain came with some healthy realizations — the actor remarked, "I have such a newfound admiration for the incredibly brave women who go through this on a monthly basis."
That's an all-star cast! Any idea how much they're making? 👀
Yes! Let's talk salary. According to a report released by Variety, Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are both making $12.5 million each for starring in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
The Variety report also listed 24 other top-paid Hollywood stars and their paychecks from upcoming movies — Steve Carrell is making the exact same amount ($12.5M) in Minions: The Rise of Gru, Millie Bobby Brown secured $10M for Enola Holmes 2, Timothée Chalamet is making $9M for Wonka, and Tom Cruise got paid a whopping $100M for the TikTok sensation Top Gun: Maverick.
Are there any official pics from the Barbie movie?
There sure are! On April 4, 2023, the official social media accounts for the upcoming film shared all-new pics of the cast, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Mackey, Ariana Greenblatt, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Nicola Coughlin, and more. The characters include Pulitzer-winning Barbies, mermaids, humans, and more. See all the pics below!
If you grew up in the 90s, it’s nearly impossible now to watch the new trailer for the forthcoming “Barbie” movie and not start singing the 1997 Aqua song — “Barbie Girl” — in your head. But in the new Greta Gerwig-helmed story, Barbie (Margot Robbie) doesn’t immediately jump in and go for a ride with Ken (Ryan Gosling) around her Barbie World.
In a movie landscape dominated by ever-expanding action-centric superhero franchises, “Barbie” is one for the girls, gays and theys.
That comes later — and the roles are reversed. lt’s Gosling’s extremely sweet, extremely blond himbo of a Ken that sneaks his way into the back seat of Barbie’s signature pink convertible as she departs Barbie Land for the real world. And, obviously, he brought his neon yellow rollerblades with him.
But the newest trailer’s delights don’t stop there. We get glimpses of Barbie as a president (Issa Rae), Barbie as an author (Alexandra Shipp), Barbie as a physicist (Emma Mackey), Barbie as a Supreme Court justice (Ana Cruz Kayne) and a Barbie whose hair has clearly been hacked off by her child owner (Kate McKinnon). Helen freaking Mirren is the narrator! A bunch of Kens (Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir) engage in a homoerotic exchange about “beaching off.” Every frame is full of bright pinks and seafoam greens and baby blues. There’s gingham and stripes and Hawaiian prints and so many perfectly matching sets.
In a movie landscape dominated by ever-expanding action-centric superhero franchises, “Barbie” is one for the girls, gays and theys. Even if fans still don’t really know what the movie is about. Landing on the same day as former President Donald Trump was arrested in Manhattan, this beautiful, bizarre, nostalgic distraction was perfectly timed. And so were the memes.
Details of the July film’s plot are somewhere between vague and nonexistent. Vogue reported in December that the movie will center on “a doll living in Barbie Land, who’s forced to leave due to her so-called imperfections — setting off on an adventure in the real world and discovering along the way that perfection can only truly be found within.” Similarly, according to Deadline, an earlier version of the film, was “a fish-out-of-water story… whereby Barbie gets kicked out of Barbie Land because she’s not perfect enough, a bit eccentric and doesn’t fit in. She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbie Land to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.” But that was before Gerwig and her husband/co-writer Nick Baumbach joined the project.
It seems likely that even if that rather cliched logline indicates the building blocks of the “Barbie” storyline, Gerwig and Baumbach, known for pioneering mumblecore, will get a little weird and campy. Especially because the cast doesn’t even seem to be able to explain what the movie they filmed is about. “Whatever you think it is, it’s not that,” America Ferrera, who plays one of the few humans in “Barbie,” told People. “It’s something else.”

But the truth is, the details are unnecessary right now. Because the extended “Barbie” trailer is sparking collective joy simply by way of the vibes and the aesthetics. There’s a reason that so many people are creating their very own Barbie-branded memes with the movie’s official selfie generator.
Culturally, we are currently experiencing a Barbiecore renaissance; one full of platforms and pink and sequins and suiting and monochrome accessories. (See: anything Valentino releases in hot pink.) Zendaya and Anne Hathaway and Lizzo have all rocked Barbiecore outfits on the red carpet. Barbiecore is about unabashed feminine camp, and after years of living in the isolation of pandemic land, you can see the appeal of the vibrancy of Barbie Land.
There is also something distinctly nostalgic about Barbie, even though Barbie dolls never went away. (Barbie sales dipped between 2014 and 2018, but in 2021 and last year, Barbie generated $1.68 billion and $1.49 billion in sales, respectively.) She is, after all, a remnant of multiple generations’ childhoods; a formative way for many of us to role-play our ideas about adulthood, especially as a woman.
Her legacy, of course, is a mixed bag. Barbie originally represented an ultrawhite, ultrafemme, ultrathin ideal of womanhood. Her feet were permanently high-heeled — a distinctive feature which the trailer winks at — and her waist was so tiny that a life-size Barbie’s organs would have a hard time fitting inside her body. A 1965 Slumber Party Barbie even came with a scale permanently set to 110 pounds and a tiny book titled “How To Lose Weight,” with only one instruction: “Don’t Eat!” It’s no wonder that Barbie became a site for feminist discourse and critique.

But the Barbie of the 2023 movie signals a less rigid and oppressive vision of what Barbie perhaps could be. Robbie’s Barbie is just one of many Barbies, played by a diverse array of actors. In 2023, Barbie can be a politician or a doctor or a lawyer or a diplomat or an author or a Pulitzer Prize winner or a mermaid. She is full of possibility. And, amid yet another incredibly depressing news cycle, positivity.
